Danyael is a freelance writer in Calgary, Alberta. She's been requested to compose sexts and heartfelt breakups, pen a story about her experience at a restaurant-catered marijuana dinner party, pre-legalization... and there was the time she wrote about getting her male dog shagged at the off-leash park. Her lifestyle features appear in numerous regional and national publications.
In the fall of 2020, Danyael worked with a Calgary family on the editing and writing of their late father's memoir about the Holocaust. Shalom, Tateh is told from the perspective of 14-year-old Mickey Sander with accompanying historical documents, photographs, family tree, and an epilogue post-liberation. It was published in August 2021.
Danyael was the Editor-in-Chief of CommUNITY Magazine, featuring the careers, community service and diverse accomplishments of 70 Calgary women. Its premier issue launched in October 2020.
Former gigs: As the photo essayist of "The Completist", Swerve Magazine saw Danyael peering into car windows, trespassing on people's property, and wandering the city's alleys with her camera; monthly book reviewer for The Calgary Herald; restaurant columnist for Fast Forward Weekly; and, the trends columnist for Swerve. She also experienced both sides of the food divide, sampling the local cowboy fare of bull testicles and sitting on an esteemed panel of Calgary food critics for Avenue Magazine's Annual Restaurant Awards.
In 2023, the International Regional Media Association awarded bronze for Best Editorial Package to Danyael and a team of writers and illustrators for their contributions to Avenue Magazine's June 2022 Innovation issue. She has also twice won Honourable Mention at the National Magazine Awards for her articles in Saturday Night and CalgaryInc.
Backstory: Danyael got her start in journalism in Toronto at Canadian Living magazine, where she held several editorial positions. While there she acted as editorial coordinator on the book Growing with Your Child (Ballantine, 1998), the magazine's first in a series of parenting books. A move to St. Joseph Media landed her the position of assistant managing editor of HealthWatch magazine.
